DUBAI, 24th December, 2024 (WAM) — Dubai is set to host the 19th World Congress of Neurosurgery in 2025, bringing one of the most prestigious congresses in the medical field to the Middle East for the first time.

The awarding of the event to Dubai follows a successful bid led by the Emirates Society of Neurological Surgeons, and supported by Dubai Business Events, the city’s official convention bureau and part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

Set to take place under the theme ‘Connecting the Neurosurgical World’, the congress is the flagship event of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), and is typically held every two years.

Dubai will welcome approximately 4,000 delegates for the event, set to take place during 1st to 4th December 2025, including key opinion leaders from the industry, innovators and changemakers.

The decision by WFNS to award the event to Dubai highlights its rapid growth as a host for international association conferences and congresses, and builds on the city’s status as the highest ranked destination in the Middle East for the number of association events hosted, according to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said, “The…

“Seas And Greetings” From NOC

Have you ever wondered what happens on ships when they’re at sea for Christmas? Crews onboard the National Oceanography Centre’s (NOC’s) research vessels, based in Southampton, have given a glimpse into the holiday season out on the ocean waves, including Christmas carols and – if one captain has his way – watching Frozen.

Both research ships that the center operates, the Royal Research Ship (RRS) James Cook and RRS Discovery, are out in the Atlantic Ocean over this Christmas period, delivering or traveling between science missions.

But being far from home, family and friends is not hampering the holiday spirit – and even NOC’s underwater robot Autosub Long Range, aka Boaty McBoatface, is in on the seasonal act.

Captain John Leask, onboard the RRS James Cook, says that while they are still supporting a science expedition, Christmas is will still be marked, with family and friends back home in all of their thoughts.

“Due to Santa’s work load he usually doesn’t make an appearance,” says Captain Leask. “But we try to make the day special and a little bit like home and, at the end of the day, this will be our family for…

Al Seer Marine Expands Fleet with Delivery of Two Modern MR Tankers – Main Feed

0
  • New vessels secure USD 84 million in charter contracts with Reliance Industries DMCC for five-year term.
  • BOCOM Leasing doubles its commitment to Al Seer Marine to USD 160 million.

Abu Dhabi, 23 December 2024: Al Seer Marine (ADX: ASM), a frontrunner in the maritime industry and a subsidiary of International Holding Company (ADX: IHC), has taken delivery of M.T. Saiph and her sister ship from K Shipbuilding Korea. These state-of-the-art vessels are the second pair in a series of six newbuilding MR tankers.

Each vessel is equipped with an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) and engineered to accommodate alternative fuels such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), ammonia, and methanol. These advanced features ensure future adaptability and compliance with stringent environmental regulations while meeting the surging global demand for clean petroleum products (CPP) and chemicals transportation.

The delivery is financed by BOCOM Financial Leasing Co., Ltd. (BOCOM Leasing), a subsidiary of Bank of Communications, securing USD 80 million—USD 40 million per vessel. This latest agreement strengthens Al Seer Marine’s partnership with BOCOM Leasing, first established in August 2024 with the USD 80 million financing of MR tankers Betelgeuse and Bellatrix, bringing BOCOM’s total commitment to USD 160 million.

“At Al Seer Marine, we continue to invest strategically in product and chemical tankers, which represents one of the most promising sectors in the maritime industry. The expansion of our partnership with BOCOM Leasing, our first international financing partner, validates our growth trajectory and market potential. This aligns with our vision to become a global leader in meeting the surging demand for refined petroleum products and chemicals trade, a position increasingly recognised by financial markets and key investors,” stated Guy Neivens, CEO at Al Seer Marine.

With a deadweight of 49,757 MT each, the two modern vessels are IMO II/III oil and chemical tankers carefully engineered to carry six fully segregated grades of cargo for optimal global operations. The vessels’ dimensions and sophisticated design ensure versatile navigation capabilities and unrestricted access to major ports worldwide, including efficient passage through strategic maritime routes. Both tankers have secured 5-year time charters with Reliance Industries (Middle East) DMCC, valued at USD 42 million per vessel, joining their sister ships Betelgeuse and Bellatrix in the charter arrangement.

With the delivery of the two modern tankers, Al Seer Marine has just two vessels remaining from the six MR tankers ordered from K Shipbuilding, with completion expected in January 2025. The delivery of these final vessels is expected to further enhance Al Seer Marine’s commercial revenues. The company’s robust performance in the first half of 2024 saw total assets reach AED 7.5 billion (USD 2.04 billion), with revenues climbing to AED 580 million (USD 158 million). The expanded fleet reinforces its position as a key partner and investor in the UAE’s maritime sector, complementing its strategic investments exceeding AED 1.45 billion (USD 395.1 million) in Abu Dhabi Ports and ADNOC Logistics and Services.

Great Ships Of 2024: Ane Mærsk

0

When talk turns to fuel transition in the maritime sector, the conversation usually starts with: ‘yes, change is happening, but the majority of the world fleet continues to operate as it always has; with diesel fuel’ and ends with ‘change is being driven by a handful of pioneers: the big companies.’
Enter Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller – Mærsk, one of the biggest and most innovative companies operating ships globally today, and its world’s first large methanol-enabled container vessel dubbed Ane Mærsk, delivered earlier this year from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) in Ulsan, South Korea. Ane Mærsk is Maritime Reporter & Engineering News’ ‘Great Ship of 2024.’

The vessel is named after Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the Chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation and A.P. Moller Holding. Ane’s eldest granddaughter served as godmother and christened the vessel.

Ane Mærsk is equipped with a dual-fuel HYUNDAI-MAN B&W 8G95ME-C10.5-LGIM-EGRTC main engine, able to generate 44,187 kW.

Its methanol fuel capacity is 16,000 cu. m. in two tanks beside each other, located forward of the engine room, and it can sail up to 23,000 nautical miles on methanol corresponding to 41,400 km (1 nautical mile = 1,8 km) when fully bunkered. Both the main…

Tough Regulations for Ships as EU Moves to Contain Plastic Pellet Pollution

0

Europe is taking measures to tackle the challenges of plastic pellet pollution with the drafting of regulations that specifically set tough obligations for ocean-going vessels. The targeting of maritime transport is due to the fact that the sector accounts for around 38 percent of all pellets transported in the European Union (EU), with cases of pollution by seagoing vessels remaining high.

The European Council contends that plastic pellet losses to the environment are the third largest source of all unintentional microplastic releases, with 50,000 to 180,000 tonnes of pellets accidentally released into the environment annually. A huge amount is released during loading or unloading operations or due to leaky containers, with the impacts being detrimental to marine life, human health, and the environment said the EC members.

Research has shown that pellets comprise about 70 percent of the plastic eaten by seabirds, with small plastic particles being found in the stomachs of 63 of the world’s approximately 250 species of seabirds.

It has also been established that by weight, plastic pellets are the second largest direct source of microplastic marine pollution with billions of individual pellets entering the ocean every year.?This is due to both small and…

BOEM Okays New England Offshore Wind Project

0

The Interior Department has now approved more than 19 gigawatts of offshore wind energy.

The Biden-Harris administration today announced the approval of the SouthCoast Wind Project – the nation’s 11th commercial-scale offshore wind energy project approved under President Biden’s leadership. With today’s approval, the Department and its Bureau of Ocean Energy Management have approved over 19 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy from offshore wind energy projects – enough to power more than 6 million homes.

The SouthCoast Wind Project is expected to generate up to 2.4 GW of offshore wind energy for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, enough to power more than 840,000 homes. The project area covers approximately 127,388 acres and about 26 nautical miles (nm) south of Martha’s Vineyard and 20 nm south of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The project, as approved, includes the construction of up to 141 wind turbine generators and up to five offshore substation platforms located at a maximum of 143 positions, and up to eight offshore export cables potentially making landfall in Brayton Point or Falmouth, Massachusetts. Compared to SouthCoast’s original proposed project, the selected alternative removes up to six wind turbine positions in the northeastern…

Volunteers Battle Black Sea Oil Spill

0

Volunteers struggled on Friday to shovel up tons of sticky oil from Russia’s Black Sea coastline following what President Vladimir Putin has called an ecological disaster.

The oil spilled from two ageing Russian oil tankers that were severely damaged by a weekend storm in the Kerch Strait that separates southern Russia from Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014. One of the vessels split in half, and a crew member was killed, while the other ran aground.

At the sea’s edge, volunteers shoveled oil and blackened sand into white sacks to be taken away in trucks, as more viscous black tar drifted in on the waves.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. I can’t even really imagine it. It seems to me that nature will be affected for many decades to come,” said one of the volunteers, a woman who gave her first name as Tatiana.

“Even when you remove the top layer of sand, then you step on it and fall through, because there is still fuel oil under the sand.”

Volunteers have set up a rescue center for stricken sea birds such as cormorants, which flapped their wings in distress as oil was wiped from their plumage and syringes were used to feed them. The head of the center, Evgeniy Vitishko, said some 500 birds had been treated, but more than 30 had…
