Port Of Oakland Celebrates Expansion Of Free Water
The Port of Oakland is celebrating the expansion of the Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle, a free pilot program initiated by the City of Alameda, offering public water transit between Oakland’s Jack London Square and Bohol Circle Immigrant Park, at the foot of 5th Street in Alameda. As of July 8th, the service now includes Tuesdays and extended weekend hours—increasing total weekly trips by 35%.
Initiated by the City of Alameda and partially funded by the Port, the shuttle operates Tuesday through Thursday from 7:20 a.m. to 8:03 p.m., and extends service Friday through Sunday from 7:20 a.m. to 10:16 p.m. Each vessel accommodates 31 passengers and 14 bicycles, and all rides are wheelchair accessible and free of charge.

Greek-Managed Tankers Divert Around Africa To Avoid Red
Several Greek-managed tankers transporting Russian oil to Asia are increasingly avoiding the Red Sea, opting instead for the longer route around Africa, due to escalating security threats from Houthi attacks, three oil traders and LSEG shipping data show.
The rerouting follows a deadly drone and speedboat assault earlier this month on a Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated bulk carrier off Yemen, which killed four seafarers. The Iran-backed Houthi group also sank another vessel in July, ending a brief period of calm in the region.
The Red Sea, a vital artery for global oil and commodity trade, has seen traffic plummet since Houthi attacks began in November 2023. The group claims the assaults are in solidarity with Palestinians amid the Gaza conflict.
While most Western shipowners abandoned the Suez Canal route last year, Russian oil shipments had largely continued through the region, benefiting from Moscow’s close ties with Iran, which backs the Houthis.
Greek shipping companies have recently become active in Russia’s Urals oil market as the price of the grade dropped below the Western price cap of $60 per barrel, allowing them to provide transport and insurance services while complying with sanctions under the Group of Seven price cap terms.

Barcelona To Scale Back Cruise Capacity Amidst
The port of Barcelona, Europe’s busiest for cruise ships, will scale back its passenger terminal capacity by 2030 as the city tries to put the brakes on surging arrivals and address concerns about overtourism.
The city hall and port authority agreed on Thursday to reduce the number of terminals to five from seven, lowering the port’s capacity for simultaneously handling cruise ship passengers to 31,000 from 37,000 by the end of the decade.
Barcelona recorded a 21% increase in cruise ship calls and a 20% rise in passengers to 1.2 million people in January-May this year from the same period in 2024, official data showed. That was a sharp acceleration after passenger numbers grew a total 20% in 2018-2024.
There have been protests against tourism and debates about overcrowding in the Spanish city.
“For the first time in history, limits are being placed on the growth of cruise ships in the city,” Mayor Jaume Collboni said, announcing the agreement.
The left-wing mayor told Reuters last year he was seeking a new deal with port authorities to reduce the number of one-day cruise calls, in an effort to avoid overcrowding at cultural landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia basilica.

ICS Concerned About Potential Complexity Of IMO’S
In April, the IMO member states took a historic step by agreeing to the Net-Zero Framework (NZF) – the world’s first global emissions price for an entire industry.
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) fully supports the framework but says that shipowners are concerned about how complicated the new rules could become, especially smaller to medium sized companies, who may struggle with compliance costs.
So far, the focus has been on the penalties for emissions (‘the sticks’), but clear incentives (‘the carrots’) for cleaner fuels will be just as important, says the ICS. It is these incentives that will motivate fuel producers to deliver the new fuels and infrastructure that will enable shipping to meet the targets.
Governments must also quickly set clear standards for these cleaner fuels. This will reassure fuel producers that investing in green fuel infrastructure makes sense.
In October, the IMO is expected to adopt these measures and give details about how these incentives will work. Shipowners and energy producers need certainty on this so they can confidently make investments in cleaner technologies.

Onboard Carbon Capture To Feed Cement Production
UK-based Seabound will install a carbon capture system on the 5,700 GT cement carrier UBC Cork, owned by Hartmann Group and managed by InterMaritime.
The captured carbon — bound in limestone — will be offloaded at the Port of Brevik, Norway, and used in Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik cement plant. Recently inaugurated, this world-first industrial-scale carbon capture facility in the cement industry will produce net-zero concrete.
Seabound’s containerized carbon capture system uses calcium looping technology to capture up to 95% of CO₂2 and 98% of sulfur emissions from ship exhaust. The process uses calcium hydroxide, derived from calcium oxide and commonly known as slaked lime, to absorb CO2 and convert it into limestone that is stored onboard.
This design decouples carbon capture from post-processing, resulting in lower energy requirements, faster deployment and reduced cost compared to traditional liquefied CO2 systems, says Seabound.
