Croatia-based bulk carrier and tanker owner Alpha Adriatic has selected Marlink to provide LEO internet solution with cyber security tools for its fleet.

Alpha Adriatic will benefit from Sealink NextGen’s combination of VSAT and LEO internet, together with robust back-up and Marlink’s Advanced Threat Detection, Unified Threat Management and Endpoint Detection cyber tools.

Marlink will upgrade the hybrid network solution onboard, integrating Starlink to enhance options available for business applications and improving connectivity available to crews.

Headquartered in Pula, Croatia, and listed on the Zagreb Stock Exchange, Alpha Adriatic operates in the dry bulk and tanker sectors, offering full ship management services to third parties.

Maestral, an Abu Dhabi-based shipbuilding joint venture between Fincantieri and EDGE, has lined up a major ‘In-Service Support Strategic Partnership Project’ for the entire navy fleet of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), worth over $520 million.

The contract to Maestral will be awarded by Tawazun Council, an independent government entity that works closely with the Ministry of Defence and security agencies in the Gulf country.

The value of the agreement is of approximately $524 million over a five-years period.

Maestral will serve as the industrial strategic partner, overseeing comprehensive maintenance management of the UAE Navy to meet key operational and logistic needs, and supporting UAE Navy’s transformation journey to new levels of performance over the next five years.

The strategic partnership project will see a close collaboration between Fincantieri and EDGE Group entity, Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB) under the Maestral joint venture.

Greece’s Ombudsman has found that the coast guard failed to follow maritime rules in one of the Mediterranean’s worst shipwrecks in 2023, raising the alarm only after the overcrowded migrant boat sank, sources told Reuters.

The conclusions of the inquiry by Greek Ombudsman Andreas Pottakis, which have not been published, confirm survivors’ testimonies and have been sent to a naval court investigating potential criminal actions by the authority.

Last week, Pottakis recommended disciplinary action against eight coast guard officers citing “clear indications” of alleged dereliction of duty which resulted in endangering the lives of those aboard the trawler named Adriana.

The Shipping Ministry said that judicial authorities would evaluate the report and that it trusts the coast guard for the “effective protection” of Greek and EU borders.

Coast guard authorities have denied any wrongdoing and on Friday referred to the Shipping Ministry’s statement when asked for comment.

The coast guard was monitoring Adriana for 15 hours before it capsized and sank in international waters off the southwestern town of Pylos on June 14, 2023. It had left Libya for Italy with about 750 people on board. Only 104 are known to have survived.

The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) has collided with a merchant vessel near Egypt, the U.S. military said on Thursday, though the nuclear-powered carrier was stable and there were no injuries.

In a statement, the U.S. Navy said the carrier Harry Truman collided with the Besiktas-M late Wednesday night while operating near Port Said in Egypt.

“The collision did not endanger the Harry S. Truman as there are no reports of flooding or injuries. The propulsion plants are unaffected and in a safe and stable condition,” the Navy added.
