Seaward Services, Inc. (SSI), a subsidiary of Hornblower Group, announced its selection by the Maine State Ferry Service (MSFS) and the Maine State Department of Transportation for a new 5-year contract to provide supplementary marine crew services to the MSFS fleet of vessels.

MSFS provides essential, year-round mainland transportation services to the island communities of Maine. Through this partnership, Seaward will support and supplement the existing MSFS crew across six different ferry routes that connect Maine’s island communities. Seaward’s continued provision of expert and professional crew will ensure vessels remain operable and accessible throughout the year for the island and coastal communities of Maine.

In this role, Seaward will provide Masters, Engineers, Able Bodied Seaman, and Ordinary Seaman who will work side-by-side with MSFS employees in the safe navigation and maintenance of vessels serving the people of Maine.

Under the new contract awarded by MSFS, Seaward will build on its previous success providing supplemental crew to MSFS since June of 2024. Silverback Marine has announced its partnership with Sweden-based company PETESTEP to develop a high-performance law enforcement boat for the New Mexico State Parks Rangers.

The patented PETESTEP technology differs from the SPRAYWATER shape and traditional stepped hulls. The technology utilizes angled deflectors as opposed to steps, which take advantage of the spray energy generated by the hull when underway. Compared to a standard monohull, the reduction in G force (slamming) is reduced up to 50%, with an average overall reduction of 30%.

The Panama Canal Administrator, Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, delivered the 43rd Annual William A. Patterson Distinguished Transportation Lecture at Northwestern University this week, in which he laid out the crucial role the Panama Canal has played in the development of global trade and the impact it has had on the greater evolution of humanity in Panama, and throughout the world.

The Northwestern University Patterson Transportation Lecture is an award that recognizes Vásquez and influential leaders from all facets of the transportation industry.

Tracing the evolution of the waterway’s conception as a 16^th century crossroads, to its 1914 debut as a formal channel for global shipping, Vásquez described the innovation and evolution among the canals earliest customers and supporters that allowed the canal to develop into the crucial position it holds today within the transportation industry.

Today, the powerhouse hub known around the world as the Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and connects more than 1,920 ports throughout 170 countries. Fort Lauderdale – Resolve Academy, a provider of maritime training, hosted its 19^th annual Damage Control Olympics on April 29. The spirited competition of shipboard firefighting and vessel flooding exercises were designed for officers and crews from U.S. Navy and U.S Coast Guard visiting Port Everglades during Fleet Week Fort Lauderdale. Crews from the USS New Hampshire, USS New York, USCGC Tampa and USS Cole participated. 

Resolve Marine and its training arm, Resolve Academy, created the Damage Control Olympics as a gesture of appreciation to the service men and women who defend the country at sea.
